Touching the wild in style...no bull!Eco Travel Africa has been working closely with its sister company Eco Lodge Africa in bringing online the Grumeti Luxury Tented Camp. Despite the name the emphasis of this project is not so much luxury as sustainability in comfort. This is just the sort of project that we like to get our teeth into here. It is promoting tourism, which we all know is essential to hundreds of local economies across the region, and to national economies too, while at the same time searching for ways to reduce the impact of permanent and semi-permanent structure have on the wild environment. Another thing that really helps Grumeti stand apart is the fact that it is poised directly on the Migration corridor. Therefore, as this great event plays out within sight of the hospitality area, the facility is blended as discreetly into the environment as possible. The Grumeti Wildlife Reserve is part of the general family of conservancies that showcase the mixed habitat of the Serengeti/Mara ecosystem, but also Ngorongoro Crater which is very much a unique feature of the region. The Grumeti Reserve above situated in the northern sector of the Serengeti National Park within the characteristic rolling savanna woodland of northern Serengeti. It is a mixed use area, so is liberated from many of the regulations of the park...these include being able to get out on your feet and mingle with the wildlife, and to conduct game drives in an open vehicle. And while there is no shortage of general wildlife in the reserve, the opportunity to turn over rocks, poke around in ant heaps and search out the smaller and more varied species, it also offers huge protection for birdwatchers to really penetrate the riparian forest and woodland for many of the elusive woodland species that make up our amazing birdlife. Doing all this in the company of a local guide also helps to get under the skin of the environment. While local people might lack formal education - you will never write your doctoral thesis on animal behavior from this source, but you will absorb a sense of the instictive understanding local people have of an environment they have been immersed in since birth.... So keep an eye on this space. I will be traveling to Tanzania to help get things organized and will post updates on how it all unfolds... |
