Eco Lodge Africa

Eco Lodge Africa is based in Tanzania and offers a wholly sustainable travel experience for the connoisseur of African wildlife. It is not for the wildlife thrill-seeker, and perhaps not even for the first-timer. The flagship property of the company is Grumeti Luxury Tented Camp, situated in the Grumeti Wildlife Reserve migration corridor, north of the Serengeti National Park, and adjacent to the upper Grumeti River where most of the interesting wildlife impact is felt.

The camp itself is positioned against a hillside looking over the signature acacia/commiphora savannah woodland that is so typical of this part of Africa. It is not too far from the Serengeti National Park itself, and so if you need an injection of mass wildlife, then the opportunity in there, but the Grumeti Reserve is a far more subtle experience than this…

Wildlife for the connoisseur…

For sure there are all the signature plains species to be found: elephant, giraffe, impala, wildebeest etc, but within and around the Grumeti River can also be found many of the smaller and more interesting species that are often absent on the plains.

Birding on the Grumeti…

The Grumeti River is a teeming habitat for birds and small mammals

In my opinion it is in the field of bird-watching that the Grumeti River and surrounds offers its absolute best.

During my recent trip over I recorded over a hundred different species within a month of observing in and around the camp. Here is a link to these, and although they are not all by any means rare, they all represent interesting sightings, and as is often the case they are simply the tip of the iceberg.

Community guiding…

At Grumeti Luxury Tented Camp we offer a full spectrum of guided wildlife activities. The camp is fairly new so the guiding ethos is in its infancy, but we are making a point of keeping it community based and using as much as possible people from the local Ikoma community as guides and spotters. The advantage of this is that local communities are in one way or another drawn into the process of conservation for reasons of economic relevance. It is, after all, only a solid monetary return that makes conservation worthwhile, and this makes sound business sense for us and for them.
